Ashburn, VA (Sports Network) - The Washington Redskins have signed their first-round draft pick, offensive tackle Trent Williams. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the Washington Post reports it to be worth $60 million over six years with more than $37.5 million guaranteed.
Williams was selected with the fourth overall pick of April's draft after a stellar collegiate career at Oklahoma and, as of Friday morning, was the highest first-round pick to agree to a contract.
"I just went with what my agent thought was best," said Williams about not waiting for the other three higher picks to sign. "I just wanted to be here at camp. I felt my agent and the Redskins would make a contract that was good for me. I couldn't really pay too much attention to what the other guys had going on."
Williams missed the first day of camp on Thursday, but said he didn't want to miss any more time.
"We were prepared to miss one day, but I urged [my agents] that I didn't want to miss any more," Williams stated.
The 6-foot-5 native of Texas was an All-American and a First-Team All-Big 12 choice as a senior in 2009. He is expected to take over the left tackle slot in the wake of Chris Samuels' retirement.
